About

Building on improvised jams recorded during 2018, the album took shape in December 2018 when West returned from Australia for another whiskey soaked writing frenzy.

Prisoners was one of over 30 improvisations recorded when Cian O Cinnseala joined the group for 3 days of chaotic noises in April 2017 - one tune persevered at least.

  • Brian West: vocals, guitars
  • James Jones: bass, keys
  • Alan Maguire: lead guitar, keys, bass, backing vocals
  • Brendan Tuite: guitar, keys, drums
  • Cian O Cinnseala: guitar

Recorded by Tuite at PoloFace studios, Leitrim, Ireland
Mixed by Paul Brewer at Genius Move Studio, except Prisoners mixed by O Cinnseala in New Zealand; Light & Perfect Life mixed by Tuite

Artwork by Tuite and Maguire

Lyrics

I just don't have time for no excuses
I can't understand why you won't try
Break out of the cage they put around us
Show them what they never could expect
I have faith, I know you can astound us
It don't come cheap, but neither does respect
C'mon, show me what you got!
Push and pull the weight of our abuses
I love it when you cut me down to size
I just don't have time for your excuses
I can't understand why you won't try
Push and pull the weight of our abuses
I love it when you cut me down to size

I feel about as useful as a bandaid on a bullet wound
I can take a beating, sometimes I think you want me to
It's my bravado, you say it has no place inside
but your world is empty, you're begging me to take your side

Come what may, you scream and shout
I let you in, you shut me out
An impasse like a logjam on a stream
So have your say you want it all
you pushed me up against the wall
then cut me so adrift upon the sea

It pleases you to watch me bleed
It teases you to feel my need

You're about as useful as a bandaid on a bullet wound
You can take a beating, sometimes you think I want you to
It's your bravado, I say it has no place inside
But my world is empty, I'm begging you to take my side

Come what may, you scream and shout
I let you in, you shut me out
An impasse like a logjam on a stream
So have your say you want it all
you pushed me up against the wall
then cut me so adrift upon the sea

It pleases you to watch me bleed
It teases you to feel my need

You're about as useful as a bandaid on a bullet wound
You can take a beating, sometimes you think I want you to
It pleases you to watch me bleed
It teases you to feel my need
You're about as useful as a bandaid on a bullet wound
You can take a beating, sometimes you think I want you to
You're about as useful as a bandaid on a bullet wound
But my world is empty, I'm begging you to take my side

Can you hear me speaking
Can you hear me drinking
Lemonade? I need some whiskey
Drink my drink all over my body

Walk beneath the canopy
under speckled light
sing that old familiar song
the one that comes to life
shouldn't make a difference
if what we say is true
you lead and I will follow on
my heart belongs to you

It's hard sometimes to find the light

Tell me all the sweetest lies
absolve me of my sins
console me when the world caves in
hold me close and let me in
doesn't make a difference
if what we say is true
you lead and I will follow on
my heart belongs to you

It's hard sometimes to find the light

So walk beneath the canopy
dance in the speckled light
sing that old familiar song
the one you bring to life

Stillness creeps into the beating hearts
there's doubt and loss in all the moving parts
helpless souls that lived here once
so far and wide, so lost for words
pilgrims on this lonely road
just moving through these deserted places

And so we wander to the mountain
to make our peace among the ghosts
I hold your hand and face the moment
despite the fear it's worth the cost
I give myself to you completely
it's only now I recognise
the wonder of the time we have left
the glory of this perfect life

No one knows
if what they seek will bring forth ruin or sweet salvation
Our faded glory, our broken past
that feeds the lust for something sacred
embrace our demons, draw them close
they terrorise, but they enhance the feeling

And so we wander to the mountain
to make our peace among the ghosts
I hold your hand and face the moment
despite the fear it's worth the cost
I give myself to you completely
it's only now I recognise
the wonder of the time we have left
the glory of this perfect life

You can pry it from my cold dead hand
then bury me beneath the shifting sand
but my spirit's going to haunt you forever
it's no less than you deserve
I suffered you, your prejudice rankles
it burrows like a maggot in my psyche

Lift the veil now, spill the truth out just like water
I shudder to think how you hoodwinked the slaughtered

I suffered you
your prejudice rising
I ran in circles over troubled ground
straight in to the palm of your grabbing hands
All in all, this endless game
to understand why we're not the same
I suffered you, still suffer you
your malice revealing
history laid open and bare like some glittering prize
you think you've earned it somehow
I think you've subsumed me now

Lift the veil now, spill the truth out just like water
I shudder to think how you hoodwinked the slaughtered
I shudder to think how, how you hoodwinked the slaughtered

Well it's a shame to say it
we are prisoners now
walking on eggshells brother
watching the world go down

I just want to take it back to how it used to be
so come on now just cut me some slack
just let me be, set me free

the fashion police are coming
the thought police coming too
they're coming to take me brother
one day they'll come for you

I just want to take it back to how it used to be
so come on now just cut me some slack
just let me be, set me free

Well it's a shame to say it
we are prisoners now
walking on eggshells brother
watching the world go down
the fashion police are coming
the thought police coming too

I just want to take it back to how it used to be
so come on now just cut me some slack
just let me be, set me free

There's nowhere to hide
